This is Scouting (replaces New Leader Essentials)
Print

In March 2009, the BSA released a new course – titled “This is Scouting”. This course replaces “New Leader Essentials” (NLE) which will no longer be offered.

To take the course, click on this link: http://myscouting.org or http/olc.scouting.org. You will be presented with a log-on page. If you have signed up before, sign in and you’ll be able to take the course. (You may have to select “E-Learning” on the next page.) You should plan on spending “about an hour” on the course. Most of it is “video” – which cannot be stopped and then restarted at a later time.

If you have not signed up before, create a new account. Although it is not required, it would be BEST if you had your BSA registration number when you sign up. That way, you will receive proper credit for completing the course. As I understand it, you can add your ID # later. Sometime later this year, the BSA will realease a DVD of it – for those who do not have web access.

This is also the place to take Youth Protection Training, Fast Start, and a number of other on-line courses.

If you have previously taken NLE, you do not need to take this course. Like NLE, this course needs to be take only ONCE during a scouting career.

To be considered “trained” for a position, you need to take:
1) Fast Start for your position – also available at http://myscouting.org
2) This is Scouting OR New Leader Essentials
3) The Leader-Specific Training for your position
4) Youth Protection Training.

Leader-Specific Training varies depending on the scout program you are in (Cub, Boy, Venture, Varsity). See your committee chair for specific details.

This course IS intended as the “starting point” for scout training (just like NLE was) – right after Fast Start. Of course, you may take it at any time. It is not a pre-requesite to your leader-specific training.
