Booths are not the only thing that a Unit can volunteer to do. We need younger Scouts to hand out programs, older Scouts to act as docents, there is a creek clean-up to kick off the day, and there are also groups signing up to run events at Connemara. Just about anything goes, as long as it’s hands on and fun. This is a great way to get Scouts and Scouting ideals in front of a lot of people.

And, if all a group (or family) wants to do is attend and have fun, they’re most certainly welcome!

UPDATE 4/5/2010

A week from Saturday, the city of Allen and 35 outdoor recreation, health, and environmental organizations will conduct the second annual earthfest (previously ‘Seeding a Healthy Community’). You may have seen the call for Scouting Units to conduct demonstrations and booths; those are now set.

*What I need now are Scouts to support a few remaining events. First come, first served. *If you’re interested, email me (Randy Boys) at krboys@earthlink.net, or call at 972.727.8246.

- Ice cream making:
WHEN: 2 shifts of 2 hours (12-2, 2-4)
WHO: Scouts perhaps 11-12 and older, 2 adults (unless scouts 16+)
WHAT: There will be six ice cream maker ‘balls’. The scouts will fill the ingredients every 20 minutes or so (milk, flavoring, sugar inside / ice and salt outside), supervise the kids passing the balls around (ensure that everyone gets some time), determine when it’s ready, and serve the ice cream.

- Information booth:
WHEN: 2 shifts of 2 hours (10-12, 12-2, 2-4)
WHO: Scouts perhaps 10 and older, 2 adults (unless scouts 16+)
WHAT: Scouts will staff the main information booth. Hand out fliers, explain what/where the off-site evens are (2 in Watters Creek, 2 other accessed by hayride), answer general questions (they’ll have event staff to back them up, but not in the booth), serve as the lost and found, etc.

- Program distribution:
WHEN: Various (1-2 hours at your discretion)
WHO: Scouts of any age, as long as they are with appropriate supervision
WHAT: Hand out programs and hawk the event to shoppers at the Market Street and Borders area. Our advertising and signage is much better this year than last, but there are still many people who would not know to walk down the steps and participate in this multi-faceted event.

- Creek and marsh clean-up

WHEN: 8-9:30
WHO: Anyone (Scouts under 14 are accompanied by a parent or appropriate Unit leadership)
WHAT: Meet at the Wachovia Bank and get to work! Supplies are provided, but dress appropriately (gloves recommended)

With the exception of the last item (the creek clean-up), Scouts should be in uniform. Signage throughout the event will direct anyone with questions to ‘Ask a Scout’. They should be proud to participate in this community event and represent Scouting and its ideals. Older Scouts who want to act as free agents can also support the info booth with: set-up (9-10), as runners, coordinating the movement of people to the off site events, and participating as supporting docents in various events.

Scouts should sign in at the Information Booth. NJHS and NHS forms will also be available. All events are at the Watters Creek at Montgomery Farm complex (SE corner Bethany and Central), with local transportation provided to the off site events.

And, as a final reminder, come out as Units, individuals, or families and enjoy yourselves! We have the Blackland Raptor Rescue group and its birds, Heard Museum and its critters, free kayaking, demonstrations by REI, hayrides to the offfsite events, bird watching, meadow walks, interactive booths by many fascinating organizations, cooking with the mayor, a Leave No Trace skills station, choirs, and much more*.
